Frequently Asked Questions

 Is there an audition?

There’s no audition, however there is a basic requirement to be able to sing in tune. To check that each member can sing in tune, we will send you a pitching assessment to see how developed your tuning skills are either before or after your first rehearsal. There’s no need to worry about this, as we can help assist you whatever your level is! 🙂

Do you offer a payment plan?

If you can’t currently afford the full price, you can pay in 2x instalments. This carries a 5% admin fee.

 Do you use sheet music?

We provide sheet music at rehearsals, but there is no requirement to be able to fully understand it! You will become more familiar with it as rehearsals go, but for the first few you’ll be able to follow just the lyrics on the sheet as well as practice with your line tape recordings from home. ❤️ Only a handful of Indie Choir members can actually read sheet music. We hope to teach you a bit about sheet music during your time at Indie Choir.

I work shift work - can I attend every second week?

It depends on whether you have the time to catch up on what you missed in choir at home. You’d need maybe an hour to sit down at home, read the email of what was covered in the class you missed and catch up using the materials provided. Missing some classes is fine, but in the past some members have felt a bit stressed and behind when they miss too much and can’t catch up at home. But this has also really worked for others who practice and catch up at home.

 Can I attend online?

Yes. If you can’t make it on a certain week in person (if you are sick or can’t find childcare for example) you can join via zoom. However it’s not an option to permanently attend online as it’s essential for a true choral experience to be in person, but better to attend online rather than miss a rehearsal!

How much work is involved at home?

30 minutes home practice weekly.

 Are there many performances?

Usually 1x per term.

Is attendance mandatory/are you guys strict on attending?

Missing a few classes is fine. Our main goal is creating a sense of community, having fun singing space everyweek. But you’ll need to catch up on what you missed by checking the homework and using the line tapes at home. If you want to participate in performances, you need to meet the below:

  1. Have attended 70% of rehearsals this term. (Make sure to sign in at the roll at the start of class).

  2. Have attended the two rehearsals directly before the performance.

  3. Have attended any extra rehearsals called for the performance.

  4. Be a member of the choir for more than 7 weeks.

  5. Not be flagged with tuning issues.

Under certain exceptions the choir leader may allow you to partake in the performance if all of the requirements are not met. This is up to the choir leader.

See our Terms and Conditions for more information about the choir.
